Two things trip people up at once. Renewal is not on barbercosmo.ca.gov — it is on BreEZe, the Department of Consumer Affairs system. And once you are there, the licence is not filed under “nail”.

California licenses a “manicurist”, not a nail tech
Three names are in circulation for one licence, and only one of them is the one you have to type:
- Manicurist — the legal name. It is what the Barbering and Cosmetology Act calls the licence and what the board's fee schedule bills for. This is the term BreEZe uses.
- Nail Technician / Manicurist — what PSI calls it on the exam paperwork.
- Nail tech — what everyone actually says, and what nobody at the board wrote down.
It is a naming difference and nothing more — there is one licence, not three. But it is the reason a renewal that should take four minutes turns into a conviction that the record is missing.
No continuing education to renew
California requires none. The Act and Regulations mentions continuing education exactly once, and only conditionally — “if applicable, prescribed by this chapter” — and the chapter prescribes none. A Texas nail licence is different: 4 hours every two years.
The nail exam changed more than any other in 2026
This does not affect your renewal — California has no re-examination requirement, and a renewing licensee never sits it again. It is here because if you train, hire or mentor anyone still working toward the licence, the ground moved under them on 1 April 2026, and the nail exam moved furthest.

Half the exam is now infection control, and nail care — the subject the licence is named after — is under a quarter of it. Anyone revising from pre-2026 material is revising the old proportions. The exam is 65 questions (60 scored) in 90 minutes, written only; California dropped the practical entirely on 1 January 2022. All five licences, 2020 against 2025.
If it has already expired
An expired licence can still be renewed for up to five years after expiry, on payment of every accrued renewal fee plus the $25 delinquency fee. Past five years, renewal is no longer available.
Common questions
How much is it to renew a nail technician license in California?
$50, the same as every other individual licence the Board of Barbering & Cosmetology issues. Renew after the expiry date and there is an additional $25 delinquency fee. Note that the FIRST licence is cheaper than the others at $35 — renewal is where the price becomes the same for everyone.
Why can't I find my nail license on BreEZe?
Because California does not call it a nail license. The Barbering and Cosmetology Act and the board's fee schedule both issue a “manicurist” license, and that is the wording BreEZe uses. PSI's exam paperwork splits the difference with “Nail Technician / Manicurist”. Look for manicurist and you will find it.
Do nail techs need continuing education in California?
No. California requires no continuing education for any barbering or cosmetology licence. The Act mentions CE once, conditionally — “if applicable, prescribed by this chapter” — and the chapter prescribes none.
Does my license expire on a set date each year?
No. It runs two years from issue and expires at midnight on the last day of the month it was issued in. Two people licensed in the same year can have different renewal months, so read the licence rather than assuming a shared deadline.
My nail license expired years ago — is it gone?
Not necessarily. An expired licence can be renewed within five years of expiry, on payment of all accrued renewal fees plus the delinquency fee. Past five years it can no longer be renewed and a different route back applies.
The exam changed in 2026 — does that affect renewal?
No. The new PSI content outlines that took effect on 1 April 2026 apply to candidates sitting the exam, not to renewing licensees — there is no re-examination requirement in California. It matters only if someone in your salon is still studying: the nail exam changed more than any other, with Nail Care dropping from 49% to 22% and Safety and Infection Control rising from 38% to 50%.
